Let’s talk about NaNoWriMo.

After all, that’s only about 10 days away.

Can you believe that? In just 10 days, Halloween will have come and gone, October will be behind us, and we’ll be starting on November. It feels like this year has positively flown by, and I can’t figure out where all of it has gone.

Those of you that know are aware that November is, for me as a writer, a lot more than just the month of Thanksgiving and mounting stress as the holidays grow closer. It’s also the month where I, along with tons of other writers across the globe, embark on a journey with one single goal in mind: to write 50,000 words in 30 days.

Now, that may not seem like a lot of words when you look at the number all on its own. The average romance book, which is my genre of choice, is 70k-90k words, which means that if I was to only write 50k in November, I could be only just over halfway through my book. But that’s starting from zero. You have to go from zero to 50,000 in just 30 days, which means that you have to write 1,667 words every single day in order to reach your goal. And with an average writing speed of approximately 40 words per minute for a lot of people, that means you need to try to spend 42 minutes of every day writing. That’s 21 hours spent writing in just 30 days. Basically, an entire day of one’s life, and there are some days when the words don’t want to come and it takes far longer than 45 minutes.

Anyway, all that to say, NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is more of a challenge than most people think if they’re not participating themselves, but it’s a challenge that I love. Of course, I will be working on one of the books in the Lavender Mist Ranch series, but which one, you may ask? Well…

That is still up in the air. In my ideal world, I want to be finished writing Book 1 by the end of October, which means I have just 10 days to finish writing the first draft. Do I think that’s going to happen? Well, I am only at 14,480 words so far, and my goal is 70,000. So, is it likely? No. But would I like to try? Yes. I’ll have to update you next week and let you know.

If we happen to be living in my ideal world, I will be working on Book 2 of the series for NaNoWriMo, starting from the very beginning with only a few ideas on the plot and a few scenes I’d like to write. If we don’t? Well, I’ll keep working on Book 1 until it’s finished. And if that doesn’t take me all the way to the end of November, I’ll start Book 2 at that time.

I’m not entirely sure what the month of November will hold for me other than a lot of writing, but I’m looking forward to it! I am really loving this series that I’ve created, and I’m excited to pull the whole thing together into one beautiful reality.

See you next week!
